PS3 vs Sony's $299 Blu Ray Player

Now that several retailers have dropped the price of the Sony BDP-S350, consumers will have a decision to make when buying a Blu Ray player. Do you opt to be a PS3 that allows you to play cutting edge games or go with the stand alone Blu Ray Player?

Blu Ray stand alone players and the PS3 should continue to drop in price. The question before you upgrade to Blu Ray player is, which one to go with.

I think one question that needs to be answered is, if you're a video game player. If you are, then maybe the PS3 is your best bet. Do know that you will subject your PS3 to much more wear and tear if you take this option.
One benefit of buying a PS3 instead of the Sony Blu Ray player would be that you would save room in your entertainment center. If you're anything like me you already, you have more than a few components with who knows how many cables intertwined back there. Have you taken a peek behind your entertainment center?

The PS3 allows you to watch Blu Ray discs but also enables you to play high definition gaming as well as watching DVDs. It's also a space saver if you choose just to have this alone.

The PS3 will also eventually be developed into a high definition video streaming device. Sony does seem to be dragging it's feet here.

Moving on the the Sony Blu Ray player, which can be found for about $299 at your local electronics store or found online is a solid piece of Blu Ray hardware. Sony does hope to keep this model on the shelves for some time.

This Sony Blu Ray player does make sense if you're really not a video game player and want a stand alone Blu Ray player. Although, it doesn't come with an HDMI cable; it does have all the basics an Blu Ray player should have.

That includes component output/input, hdmi and optical sound. Note that this is also what is on a PS3.

One thing to note on the Sony Blu Ray player BDP-S350 is the load up time. It's been found that this model has a significantly higher load up time than the PS3 in comparisons.

In the end, it really depends what you're looking for whether it's a game machine or simply a high definition Blu Ray player. The PS3 also has a "coolness" factor that is hard to beat.

Hopefully you don't buy both. We do recommend if you purchase either that you do pick up the extended warranty wherever it's bought.

Wanted on Blu Ray - Arriving Dec. 2nd

Wanted comes out on December 2nd. Can you ask for anything more than Angelina Jolie in high definition? The movie wasn't much in the theaters but you can expect that it should at least worth a rental when it's released.

We'll post the review once it's released. Until then, here's the trailer. Dam, Jolie is hot.

Downey Jr does Blu Ray with Tropic Thunder

Robert Downey Jr. , Ben Stiller and Jack Black are lighting up blu ray players this week. From what we've seen, action and hilarious scenes will come in bunches. If you look closely, you'll spot Tom Cruise in one of his most original roles ever.

The plot to this movie is pretty simple. A overpaid Hollywood cast of characters get sent to Vietnam to make a war film. In order to better get in character, the cast goes guerilla and gets thrown into a war full with real guerillas. The result is solid comedic performances from Downey, Black and Stiller. Downey Jr. will be remembered here for the "white dude playing a black guy".

As far as picture quality and sound goes, it stands up to most blu ray movies out there. Again, my TV has a little trouble displaying action heavy scenes. Otherwise, the film looks solid in 1080p and 5.1 surround sound will have you pleased.

Fake Blu Rays hit the US

"The Chinese have done it", as George from Seinfield has said when discovering a cure for baldness. Unfortunately, this is much more serious. A recent article from Wall Street Journal says that authorities have uncovered a stash of pirated Blu Rays.

The fake Blu Ray discs are actually DVDs in 720p. Apparently, these crooks are ripping the high definition content from Blu Ray discs and recording the 720p version and putting it on a regular DVD. Since DVDs are much cheaper, this has created a perfect opportunity for pirates out there.

EBay has begun to warn buyers and sellers to keep an eye out for counterfeit Blu Rays. As if you didn't already have a reason to not buy stuff on Ebay, here's another one. The discs found during the raid come with the blue case and even the holographic packaging.

So far the titles that have been spotted as counterfeits have been, Pirates of the Caribbean, Harry Potter and Transformers.

One of the signs that you have a fake is that real Blu Ray discs are easily smudged with fingerprints, while their cousin the DVD isn't.

Our suggestion, would be to stay away from online merchants for now. Such as those as Ebay. Retailers should be fine. And as always, if it's too good to be true, it probably is.

We like to share deals here at Blu Ray Bomb. We just found Iron Man, Kung Fu Panda and Indiana Jones on sale at Target.

The weekly ad lists these Blu Rays at $19 dollars a piece. That's as low as you can find them online and better yet you can have them in your hands today. If there's a local Target near you, I'd recommend you paying them a visit and picking one of these up at a discount. Here's the weekly insert.

NetFlix adds another nail to HD-DVDs coffin

As if another nail in the coffin was needed. NetFlix has announced that they will stop shipping HD-DVDs on December 15th, 2008; adding more insult to injury that Blu Ray has imposed upon HD-DVD.

I guess it would've been nice for NetFlix to continue to service those that have HD-DVD players, including myself. Unfortunately, it's likely a cost cutting move. NetFlix had a good run supporting both formats but in the end it's a smart move now that Blu Ray has won the high-definition war.

The Clone Wars Lands on Blu Ray Tomorrow!

Star Wars fanatics can't seem to get enough of star wars, in any form. Neither can I. Star Wars Clone wars is likely the best animation high definition Blu Ray to date. Those might argue that Cars still holds supreme but this might be the film to knock it off.

Visuals of light sabers and action scenes are to die for. There aren't many bright colorful scenes in this but the action scenes are ones that will illuminate your high definition set guaranteed.

Sound is a plus as is produced in THX and 5.1 Clone Wars puts out crisp clear sound that will warrant you turning it up. We're currently working on locating the best price found online and will publish it shortly. Until then.

Thanks to our friends at Trailer Addict for the kick ass Clone War Movie poster.

3D - HellBoy 2 on Blu Ray

Directed and written by: Guillermo Del Toro
Starring: Ron Perlman and Selma Blair

Lowest Blu Ray Price: $26.86 at Walmart

Hellboy 2 lands on Blu Ray on November 11th. For those comic book fans, this one of the few comic to movies that translates very well. Not much can be said for Hellboy 1 which wasn't promoted as heavily as this one and didn't too much at the box office.

Blu Ray fans won't be disappointed as Hellboy 2 on Blu Ray comes with a 3D cover and in widescreen format. The action scenes are superb though my plasma has some issues with the some the darker scenes. Those with 1080p and have later versions on high definition plasmas or lcds shouldn't have any problems here. Hellboy is more than a beat em up, mash em up and shoot em up comic book film. It actually has a pretty good story line that is easy to follow and is supplemented with high definition Blu Ray goodness. This is worth a pickup for those that have already collected Spiderman & Incredible Hulk. Might as well keep the comic theme going. Lastly, what the hell is that kind of canon in the poster?

$100 in Free Blu Rays with PS3 at Walmart!

Walmart isn't holding back any punches this holiday season. Word is that local Walmarts will be giving away a $100 gift card with a purchase of a new PS3.

That $100 gift card will make sure that you go home stocked with more than a few Blu Ray's. Maybe more if they have any Blu Ray sales. Last year, it was pretty slim pickens at Walmart. We'll keep you posted if we find locations. We're trying to get a hold of some local ads here but haven't found any yet. We seen the advertisement on MSN. We're looking to find out if it's more than just an early morning sale for the day after Thanksgiving.

You're going to be hard pressed to find great Blu Ray deals this holiday season but we'll keep an eye out. Please comment if you're able to find any more info here.

A Christmas Story on Blu Ray

Directed By: Bob Clark
Written By: Jean Sheppard, Leigh Brown and Bob Clark
Starring: Peter Billingsley, Melinda Dillon, Darren McGavin, Ian Petrella, Zack Ward, Tedde Moore

What's better than seeing good old Ralphie shooting his eye in high definition? Christmas Story on Blu Ray was actually released last year but thought it would be good to post one of our favorite holiday films of all time. Though you can see A Christmas Story on TNT for about a week straight during the holidays, this is definitely one of those films to have when you have the family around for the holidays.

Not much high definition scenes to scream about here. Just good laughs and plenty of "You'll shoot your eye out, kid". The film looks great in high definition and will provide solid laughs - We've seen this movie plenty of times but if you're like me, when it's on you're likely to see it all the way through to the end.

Circuit City Plans to Close 155 Stores - Blu Ray Blow Out!

Article Updated - 11/10/2008 to include Circuit City Store Closing List

Circuit City has realized this week that the current economic situation, slumping sales, increased competition and a slumping brand is a bit too much for them to handle. As a result, they will be closing down 155 stores. That's roughly 20 percent of their 700 stores.

So what does this mean for us? Most likely Blu Ray steals and deals like those that you were able to find when HD-DVD went out of business. Though Circuit City isn't quite known for its prices on Blu Ray's you can be sure that you're going to able to find more than a few deals once they start their liquidation sales.

We're still not sure which 155 stores will be closed yet. We'll update it as soon as we know. It's probably a good idea to ask your local Circuit City Store and also keep an eye out for your newspaper inserts. Those looking for great deals on Blu Ray's better keep they're eyes open for this one.

Update: Here's the link to the stores that are closing. There's tons of them. Here's to finding some great deals on Blu Ray movies.

NetFlix Adds $1 Blu Ray Fee

Recently, NetFlix has announced that they will be adding a one dollar surcharge to the monthly account service fees for Blu Ray subscribers. NetFlix mentions that because of the high costs of Blu Ray discs, the increase charges are necessary.

They go on to mention that this is still a great deal as it's a small increase in NetFlix's monthly subscription fee and that it's well worth it to continue to be able to rent Blu Ray discs.
We all know the costs of buying Blu Ray discs are well above any average DVD costs but it seems that NetFlix is trying to pull a fast one. I do give them credit for posting this on they're blog and getting the word out, albeit quietly.

The DVD plans are pretty a pretty good deal with the top tier package costing $16.99 plus the $1 dollar extra fee for Blu Ray Rentals. I've outlined NetFlix's packages below as they are still solid deals if you're an avid movie renter and in this case and avid Blu Ray fan.

Word on the web is that most NetFlix subscribers that rent Blu Ray's often were'nt too peeved at the fact that the NetFlix subscription fees were rising to account for Blu Ray's disc costs. What bothers some NetFlix subscribers is the fact that NetFlix has a Blu Ray inventory. This doesn't mean they don't have a large selection, it's just they don't seem to have many copies of Blu Ray titles. This causes a delay in getting Blu Ray's in your mailbox. I've read that when trying to add Blu Ray movies to your selection list, you'll often see "Long Wait", meaning several customers are ahead of you in getting that Blu Ray first.

Hopefully, NetFlix can put those additional dollars to work in the form of a larger inventory of Blu Rays in terms of selection and inventory. In my opinion, it's great deal for those that actively rent. It won't be as much fun as searching the Blu Ray selection at your local Blockbuster but at the monthly price it's still a good deal.

NetFlix Plan Rentals/Month Price/Month W/ Blu Ray Surcharge
3 DVDs at-a-time Unlimited $16.99 $17.99
2 DVDs at-a-time Unlimited $13.99 $14.99
1 DVD at-a-time   Unlimited   $8.99      $9.99
1 DVD at-a-time  2/Monthly   $4.99    $4.99

Comedy lands on Blu Ray with Get Smart!

Directed by: Peter Segal
Written by: Tom J. Astle and Matt Ember
Produced by: Warner Brothers Pictures
Starring: Steve Carrell, Anne Hathaway and Bill Murray

Low Blu Ray Price: $23.95 at Amazon

The hilarious Steve Carrell stars in this comedy with the recent critically acclaimed Anne Hatthaway in high definition Blu Ray goodness.

Action and comedic scenes are great yet sometimes a bit cheesy. Though you should know that going in with all films that Steve Carrell stars in. The action scenes look fantastic in high definition and are complimented with some great 5.1 sounds that will be worth a Blu Ray rental.

Comedy, action mixed in with a few cameos from The Rock make this a good friday night rental.

Just for kicks I'm posting the spanish advertisement for Get Smart on Blu Ray. I guess they decided to just go with a solo shot of Anne Hathaway to get movie goers in the door.
